Possible Chops was founded by Dave Hooper along with his childhood friend Gary Novak. Both Gary and Dave grew up together in Glenview, IL and took their first drum lesson together from Joe Varhula. Now they are teaching together on PossibleChops.
They each have become major players in the music/drumming scene and have collaborated on this project to bring some of the most “ridiculous” drumming techniques to the web.
Dave attended North Texas State University for 2 years, and then realized college was for sissies. Not really. He studied with Peter Erskine, Gregg Bissonette, Steve Houghton, Joe Porcaro, David Garibaldi, Tom Brechtlein, and spent many hours jamming in his garage with roommate, Gary Novak.
At the age of 17, Dave began his studio drumming career. Most recently, Dave played on the soundtrack for the Netflix series Jessica Jones and Showtime’s Homeland.
Some of his career’s highlights have been working with Larry Graham, Dave Koz, Toni Braxton, Herbie Hancock, Sheryl Crow, David Sanborn, Marcus Miller, George Duke, Lee Ritenour, Diane Warren, Due Voci, Griffith Frank, The Rippingtons, David Byrne, Ray Parker Jr., Joe Sample, The Manhattan Transfer, Chaka Kahn, and James Ingram. Dave worked on Glee as a technical consultant.
Back in Chicago, Gary attended college and gigged with his father, composer/pianist Larry Novak.
Then in 1986, Novak moved to LA and became Dave’s roommate where they spent countless hours jamming in their garage.
Gary’s credits include:Allan Holdsworth, Chick Corea, David Crosby, Jeff Lorber, Michael Landau, Renegade Creation, Robben Ford, Fergie, Alanis Morissette, Lee Ritenour, Rob Zombie, Bob Berg, Scott Kinsey, Brandon Field, and the list goes on.
Dave Johnstone grew up in St. Louis, MO, where he began playing local jazz gigs at age 15. After high school Dave attended Berklee College of Music in Boston.
Dave’s credits include: Aubrey Logan (Postmodern Jukebox), Tina Aldana (Motown Records), and McPhee International Vocal Studios, Liza Minnelli, Jeff Lorber, Dave Koz, Ellis Hall, The Dan Band, Cortes Alexander, Allison Janney, Keith Lockhart and The Boston Pops, Leslie Page, and The Running Jumps. Dave has been seen performing on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Last Call with Carson Daly, Ellen, and NBC’s Last Comic Standing.
